Why we are developing Thyme Stream

Mary & Steve MacLachlan have embarked on a journey to create something exceptional on the last remaining piece of the Sam Holmes family farm ‘Sivonholm.’ The death of Mary’s brother marked the end of farming for the family.

The concept of creating something on this prime piece of farmland on the Northwest boundary of Methven township had been talked about by Mary’s parents many times over the years. Everything from a lake to an airstrip with adjoining accommodation was considered, but farming was in the blood; not land developing.

Brother Gordon’s death in 2010 presented a one off opportunity for Mary & Steve to purchase 20 acres of the farm. With this came a big responsibility to create something exceptional that the community can enjoy; all in keeping with her parent’s ideals and the Holmes family tradition of giving something back to Methven (see history).

Mary & Steve have a genuine passion to create a special blend of view, open space, and a community amenity. Where they had a choice about installing infrastructure they have not compromised on quality. For example visual high voltage overhead wires have been relocated underground, and the provision of separate services to each lot.

They are fortunate that Ashburton District Council share this vision and have approved the inclusion of an 850 m section of walkway with connectivity to the Methven Walkway, and the opportunity to utilise the Mt Harding Stream for walking, riding or playing. Mary & Steve are privileged to have the opportunity to create this exciting addition to the line-up of activities available in Methven for locals and visitors.

Mary & Steve MacLachlan are not seasoned property developers, but they have a vision for this piece of paradise. They believe in the future of Methven as a wonderful place to live and visit.
